Top 10 Films of the 2010s

10-Computer Chess (2013)

Andrew Bujalski (American)
The best film from the "Godfather of Mumblecore" - and the best that has come out of this genre

9- A Separation (2011)

Asghar Farhadi (Iranian)
One of the most morally and emotionally complex films I've ever seen

8-The Witch (2016)

Robert Eggers (American)
This is my pick for top horror film of the decade.
I haven't seen "The Lighthouse" yet (his second film) - but this debut is as raw and real as it gets

7-Good Time (2017)

Ben and Josh Safdie (American)
This film is one intense adrenaline rush of a flick
The soundtrack by Oneohtrix Point Never is my favorite of the decade

6-The Tree Of Life (2011)

Terrance Malick (American)
My favorite of Malick's flicks so far - his films after this I couldn't get as on board with the way he uses characters primarily as vessels for his philosophical ideas - but in this the emotions that are felt for these characters are so intense that when they are stripped away the effect is pretty unlike anything I've ever felt.

5-Dance of Reality (2013) / Endless Poetry (2016)

Alejandro Jodorowsky (Chilean)
These two autobiographical films are Jodorowsky's first in 23 years, and arguably his best. "Dance of Reality" & "Endless Poetry" tell the story of Jodorowsky’s childhood, his birth as a poet, and his process in becoming an artist.  It’s very Felliniesque in it’s surrealism and is visually gorgeous.   At times it’s super moving and emotional, but at other times it’s funny, and as a whole it’s a lot of fun and his most accessible film yet.

4-Certified Copy (2011)

Abbas Kiarostami (Iranian)
A very dialogue driven film set in Tuscany between a British writer and a French antiques dealer whose relationship shifts over the course of the day/film.  It deals a lot with the purpose of life & art, and authenticity.

3- Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2011)

Apichatpong Weerasethakul (Thai)
A surrealist film that deals with reincarnation - focusing on a character during the last days of his life.

2-Holy Motors (2012)

Leos Carax (French)
The film follows someone who is something like an actor through his transformation into many different characters throughout a day, then things get weird.

1-Twin Peaks: The Return (2017)

David Lynch (American)
OK - I admit, including this is sort of cheating...I'm counting this as an 18 hour David Lynch movie.  It's so unlike any "television" I've ever seen...The only series that I could say is even in the same ball-park in regards to it's depth is Krzysztof Piesiewicz's "The Decalogue".   Kyle Mclaughlin's performance in this is my favorite of any actor of all time.  I understand why so many were frustrated by this who were expecting just a continuation of the style and tone of the first two seasons, since so much of "The Return" is slow paced, some of it truly bizarre, and there are moments that are disturbing - but if you are a fan of David Lynch - this is absolutely the best thing ever.  It is surreal, intense, & a mindfuck and a half.  I believe it is the most groundbreaking work that has been made for television ever & David Lynch's greatest achievement so far.

HONORABLE MENTIONS:
Boyhood (2014) - Richard Linklater
The Lobster (2016) - Yorgos Lanthimos
Melancholia (2011) - Lars von Trier
